Despite popular opinion, Interactive Television is not new and has been around in one form or another for over fifteen years. However, what is new and generating the current buzz is the technology and relationship to the Internet channel that has added a new dimension to television viewing and capabilities. Now with the advent of Digital or High Definition Television, the quality and form of the broadcast signal has been increased to enable two way communication and multiple services to be delivered over a single carrier signal (television channel).

The method of delivery is currently via HFC (High Frequency Cable) to a set-top box connected to a cable television provider. Already trails are underway to provide these capabilities via phone lines, wireless communication and satellite channels with a wide range of services to be provided. These services range from interactive games, two-way communications, shopping and advanced entertainment.

Although currently provided via many proprietary systems, this is likely to become standardised and evolve into phone and wireless modes of delivery with gateways to the Internet for Collaborative Commerce and specialised Entertainment services for Video on Demand, Educational...etc. What this means for the corporate user, is once again defining the strategy, approach and application services to be delivered via a new channel.

How Interactive Television is delivered is bound to become as in-grained into our culture as the mobile phone has today and (Internet) appliances are now beginning too, with the Internet, Mobile Communications and Interactive TV poised to converge and receive a wider audience over the next few years.

The intent is to deliver Interactive TV as a Horizontal Solution offering for a range of Omega Solutions that are based around vertical industries. Early users are likely to be financial services, retail and providers of music, video and other entertainment services. However all will require the type of Design, Process and Profit patterns that comprise GenOmega's Omega Value Solutions and the information that can be found in our architecture and technology frameworks, reports and white papers.
